Free Range Chickens

My sister and her husband have become chicken farmers. Weird, I know, but nonetheless super exciting, especially when you have kiddos who have a blast at a chicken farm. They are raising free range chickens. If you are like me, you probably don't know what that means. I will inform you. Usually the chickens that we eat are crammed with a TON of chickens in a teeny tiny space. Then they are fed a ton so that they get huge fast and then they are killed for us to eat. Yum. Lots of the chickens die because they get so big so fast that there organs can't keep up. Free range chickens are allowed to roam around and are not caged in a tiny area. They are not force fed, actually Shawnee (sister) and Danny (bro-in-law) ration their food so that they don't hugely overeat. So, they grow big but at a normal, healthy rate and then they are killed for food. Also, it's the whole notion of "know where your food is coming from" thing. They are also fresh so when you buy them...they haven't been frozen because you get them right away. They are a bit more money per pound but they are good and they are healthy. They are also now raising a variety of types of chickens and have lately added turkeys to their family too. Seriously, the boys would love it there. Well, maybe Taegen and Strider. Kyler was petrified of the chickens and pretended to be asleep the whole time. It was funny. Anyways, if you live in Utah and are interested in getting FRESH FREE RANGE CHICKENS - I know where you can get some. They have a blog if you want more information. mcdowellfamilyfarm.blogspot.com Take a visit and check it out. If you can't tell - I am definitely promoting this and think ya'll should try at least one (if not many) free range chickens.. Kyler pretending to be asleep with my sister Farmer - Shawnee.

Strides checking out the chicks.

This is as close as Kyler would get to the chickens.

Mr. Farmer Taeg's himself.
Danny and my dad (I think) built these shelters to keep the chickens safe in storms and from the heat and such. Otherwise, they just roam about the farm.

Supper time.
